FAMILY GUY is a rather surreal animated TV series, featuring the Griffin family. Although the show is an animated series, it is in no way intended for children or those in their early teens. It is sick, perverted and politically incorrect; however it is also incredibly funny and has a huge following. The story is about a family of five and their talking dog.
Peter and Lois are the parents; Peter is a loud mouth, overweight chauvinist married to a very pretty, yet somewhat psychotic woman named Lois.Together they have three children, Chris, Megan and Stewie; Chris and Meg are both ugly teenagers and Stewie is a strangely sadistic baby, who for some reason has an incredibly vast vocabulary and is hell-bent on world domination and the assassination/ murder of his own mother.
The two most intelligent characters in the show are Stewie and Brian; Brian is a talking dog who likes to drink martinis, smoke cigars and later on in the series becomes addicted to cocaine. He and Stewie (the baby) are the most sophisticated members of the family and as such are always at ahead with one another, although Brian plays a role in taking care of Stewie.
The series was actually cancelled by the Fox Network in 2002, however was brought back into the show line up after a huge explosion of DVD sales. The show became incredibly successful through DVD sales alone and as such new series where permitted to be created. The show became so successful that in 2005 a straight to DVD movie was released entitled “Stewie Griffin – The Untold Story” in which Stewie travels forward in time with his future self and is furious to discover that his mother is still alive, he has not conquered all mankind and worst of all, he is a 30 year old virgin!
Distraught at the facts regarding his future, Stewie does everything necessary to change his destiny to stop himself from becoming his future self. The series has been so successful that it now rivals popular animated series such as “South Park” and “Futurama”, and also has a video game available where users can play as various different characters from the show. The creators of the series have gone onto produce another animated TV series known as “American Dad”, which is pretty much the same style of humour just with different characters and plot lines. The creators of Family Guy have blatantly stolen a lot of ideas from The Simpsons, the similarities between the two shows are uncanny yet the style of comedy is completely different. If you actually look for it, you will see that a lot of the jokes contained within the Family Guy Series are almost identical to some of the jokes used in The Simpsons.
In one episode of The Simpsons they actually feature a most wanted criminal’s picture of Peter with “El Plagiarismo” written underneath. There is actually an on going joke between The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. The creators of South Park released an episode entitled “Simpsons already did it” in which one of the characters from the show went mad due to the fact that every one of his ideas had already been done in The Simpsons already. In the episode, a character known as Butters starts hallucinating and sees every other character as they would appear in a Simpsons episode.
Another character known as Cartman creates a miniature civilisation in which rapid periods of evolutionary growth happen overnight, which is very similar to a Simpsons Halloween Special in which Lisa does the same thing. When Butters points out that “The Simpsons already did it”, other characters point out that that particular Simpsons episode was actually a rip off from a Twilight Zone episode, and that The Simpsons have been on the air for so long they’re bound to have come up with almost every idea in the book; fair enough.
In one Family Guy episode they actually feature Homer Simpson being run over by Stewie, with Peter remarking a comment: “Who the hell is that?” And The Simpsons have featured Family Guy a few times in their episodes.
Anyway, the Family Guy series has become successful for its own merits, and is a completely different show from either The Simpsons or South Park. The show is kind of like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it, there really isn’t much of an in between. Either way, the show is successful all over the world and has a huge following in many different countries. A huge range of Family Guy merchandise and memorabilia has been made available to the public, ranging from Toys and Action Figures to Mugs, T-Shirts and Baseball Caps.
